About Rodrigo Resende

Professor Rodrigo Resende started training in Judo when he was five years old with his father, Geraldo Resende. As soon as he developed an interest in competition his father took him to train under Master Takeshi Miura, 9th degree red belt in Judo. At 13 years of age, he started taking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes to help improve his Judo groundwork (ne-waza). Since then, Jiu Jitsu has been a permanent part of his martial arts training regimen and way of life. Rodrigo later moved from Brazil to Salvador for a year with his father where he had the opportunity to train jiu jitsu under Masters Ricardo and Edson Carvalho. Afterwards, he moved to both São Paulo and Belo Horizonte to learn at a training center for Judo athletes. He represented his State, University and also his country both before and after returning to his home. Under Master Max Trombini, one of Cia Paulista founders and a 5th degree black belt, Professor Rodrigo is a 3rd degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt, and under Master Takeshi Miura, one of the world’s most ranked Judo masters, Sensei Resende holds the 4th degree Judo black belt.

What Are Your New Year’s Resolutions?

shutterstock_62795851
So begins the season of new beginnings. It’s time to start updating those rusty bucket lists with fresh new stuff you want to accomplish this year. It’s the launch pad to a better you, and like most people, you probably want to make sure that you’re going to walk away with something meaningful 12 months from now. New years resolutions, while some rarely keep up with it, is also a test to yourself, to see if you have the discipline and consistency that it takes to make yourself better this year. 2016 is no different – millions of people around the world hope to improve themselves by changing old habits, breaking routines, and well, flossing their teeth as often as they can.

When it comes to improvements to your physical and mental state, learning a new martial art is generally accepted as a popular resolution to take on. Depending on your personal goals, it can knock a few items off your list all in one shot. Today we’re going to explore a few very popular resolutions that can make your 2016 absolutely stellar.

Get Fit – Probably the most popular resolution amongst hopeful go-getters, getting fit is important because it provides an opportunity to improve your health and feel more confident about yourself. As you may know, getting fit plays a huge part in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, and whether your skill level is novice or advanced, a good instructor will understand this and adjust your class accordingly. Stick to the schedule, and you’ll feel both the physical and mental improvements.

Minimize Stress – Stress plays a factor in most people’s lives. While yoga and meditation have their benefits, it is a widely known fact that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will allow you to relieve your stress through focus, discipline, and building your mental toughness. BJJ gives you greater control of your mind and through repetition and good ol’ hard work, you’ll find that BJJ will give you not only an outlet for your stress, but will also build your mental strength as well.

Learn Something New – Most people like the idea of walking away from the current year with a new skill attached to their belt. Another popular New Year’s resolution is the need to learn something new. If you haven’t tried it, this is your chance to say that in 2016, you learned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. Now, we’re not going to guarantee you’ll have a black belt overnight – BJJ is a process of continual learning, and even improving one belt rank will give you the confidence boost you need. It’s not just another skill – it’s the first of many new skills that you will continue to obtain going forward. And we offer free trials if you want to try it out too!

Protect Yourself and Your Family – Self defence is an important aspect of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. Self control, discipline and respect for others are common characteristics that you will take away from each class. By learning an important martial art like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Judo, you will have better control of the unprovoked situations that may occur around you. As a service to the Spruce Grove community, we offer free one-hour self defence classes for both men and women of any age every Friday at 12:00pm and 7:00pm, as well as women’s self defence classes every Friday at 7:00pm.
